When times are tight, small acts of community care make a big difference. That spirit drives the Aylesham & Rural Local Pantry, launched in May 2023 and run in partnership by Bechange and the Aylesham Community Trust.
Based at the Old School site on Ackholt Road, CT3 3AJ, the Pantry looks and feels like a friendly neighbourhood shop. Members choose the items their households will actually use, including fresh fruit and veg, chilled and frozen foods, store-cupboard staples, and household essentials, all picked straight from the shelves.
How it works
The Pantry runs on a simple and affordable membership model. For £4.50 per weekly shop, members choose a basket that supplements a regular food shop, helping to stretch budgets while maintaining choice and dignity at the centre. It is practical support delivered with a smile.
More than a shop
Pop in during opening hours and you will notice the Old School Coffee Shop & Kitchen buzzing next door. It is a welcoming spot to grab a tea or coffee and catch up with neighbours before or after your shop. Those conversations build connections, reduce isolation, and often open the door to other Bechange and ACT activities, services, and advice.
A proud milestone
Aylesham’s Pantry opened as the 100th site in the national Your Local Pantry network. This achievement reflects rising demand and the commitment of local volunteers, partners, and supporters who make it possible.

Beyond the Pantry, a stronger partnership
The Pantry is one part of how ACT and Bechange work together. We share facilities and resources, refer people between services so that help reaches the right place quickly, co-host community events, and support our amazing volunteers and staff. By hosting Bechange at a reduced rate on our site, ACT helps ensure that more resources are directed to local people.
Looking ahead
As Aylesham grows, our shared goal stays simple.
- People can access support when they need it.
- Training, employment, and personal development opportunities are conveniently located near home.
- Our village remains a connected, welcoming, and caring community.
- We will continue to listen and adapt, because strong communities are built together.
